Halibut Cove Lagoon
Looking for a quiet spot to soak in some Alaskan beauty? Access to hiking trails? Great kayaking? Check out Halibut Cove Lagoon, a hidden gem tucked behind the private community of Halibut Cove. There are porpoise, seals, sea otters, and if you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of some land otters working their way along the shore. Halibut Cove Lagoon is home to the Kachemak Bay State Park Ranger Station and three public use cabins—you can access Halibut Cove East Cabin and Halibut Cove Overlook Cabin from a public dock (a great place to fish, start your kayak adventure, or just hang out), or you can try Halibut Cove West Cabin close by. The cabins connect to trails to Leisure Lake (aka China Poot Lake) and Poot’s Peak, but check trail conditions for possible flooding before you go! Halibut Cove Lagoon is tide-restricted and inaccessible at low tides; these tide fluctuations also turn the channel into the lagoon into a strong-running river, so we do not recommend kayaking out of the lagoon unless you REALLY know what you’re doing!
