Tutka Bay Backdoor Trail
If you’re looking for an amazing and challenging true-Alaska experience, the Tutka Bay Backdoor Trail is for you! The great folks at Groundtruth Trekking led an all-volunteer crew on this monumental effort to build a trail from Taylor Bay on the Gulf of Alaska to Tutka Bay - and now into Jakolof Bay - in Kachemak Bay. It stretches 32 miles (21 miles to Tutka Bay) of rugged backcountry terrain with over 6000 elevation gain, covering a variety of ecosystems from rocky ridges and high traverses to tundra, marshes and stream crossings. Due to the unpredictable weather on the Gulf of Alaska side - and the chance you can get stuck there for a while in bad conditions - it’s highly recommended you start your trek with a flight into Taylor Bay; Mako’s Water Taxi can (just about!) always get you in Tutka or jakolof Bays. This is a multiday trip - most folks do 3-5 days
This amazing trail is far from any services and there’s no cell phone coverage, so it’s for experienced backcountry hikers only!
