Chugachik Island
If you’re looking to get away from it all, Chugachik Island is the place for you! The island lies about 17 miles from the Homer Spit, just beyond the entrance to Bear Cove, and it provides some amazing camping, kayaking, and tidepooling opportunities. Getting there takes about an hour, depending on conditions. Our friends with the Kachemak Bay Water Trail have done a bang-up job clearing room for 3-4 tent sites on the south shore, with two fire rings, two picnic tables, a bear-proof food locker, an outhouse, a tent platform, and a trail register. The island’s not too big, and there’s a short (3/10 mile) trail to the north side. Just know this: the typical day breeze in Kachemak Bay can put some hefty swells on the south beach, making pick-up and drop-off tricky, so watch the weather and talk to our office when making your plans (and if you’re like us, you’d say “Well, if there’s a pounding swell on the south side, we’ll just get picked up on the north side!” Then, we would have to respond, “That’s a great idea, but the huge tides in Kachemak Bay often mean the north side is dry, with no water for boat access.”). Like anywhere in Kachemak Bay, know the tides and weather before you go! Call our office for more information.
